Espree Devora

I had the chance to meet with Espree Devora through a common friend to learn about “the Girl who Gets it Done“.  You can push play to learn more.

What did you do before becoming an online marketing expert and how did you get into that industry?

It all started playing on Prodigy in my father’s office as a little girl. Ha! Some people reading this may not even know what Prodigy is. Wow. Then in my early 20s I created my action sports company ZEXsports.com before MySpace existed. That has given me an edge above the competition since I was there to watch social media and traditional internet marketing develop.

What qualities and traits make for a good online marketing expert?

Be authentic. Give away value selflessly. I know that’s said over and over, but it truly seems like people don’t get it. Use the social networks to help others. If someone has a flat tire tell them where or how they can fix it. Even if you’re in the flower business.  Using social media is not about soliciting your services. It’s about helping people and then those people seeking you out. If you rather stay private then select Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for online marketing.

What tools of the trade do you use throughout your typical day and how do they help?

By far Shoeboxed (www.shoeboxed.com) is the biggest time and money saver for business development and accounting. It’s the NetFlix for Business cards and receipts. I LOVE Market Samurai for market research!  Amazing tool!  It tells me where people are online and who is looking to spend money. So before I start any campaign I am equipped knowing my target audience. I plan out my startegies with Mind Meister (www.mindmeister.com). Such an easy to use collaborative mind mapping tool. I love Codeita to develop sites as well as WordPress.org of course. Oh! and Crazy Egg is my favorite for analyzing how effective my websites are.

I cannot help, but notice how many people call themselves internet marketing experts.  Are they just throwing the title around or are there really that many internet marketing experts out there today?

Personally the term “expert” makes me want to puke. I think a lot of people are BS unfortunately.  It takes SO MUCH WORK to be effective online.  Unless an expert has a team of people behind him like I do, case studies to prove his/her worth and testimonials I wouldn’t move forward with just anyone.

Some of our readers are up and coming internet marketing experts.  What advice can you give them and how can they get that seal of approval of becoming an expert in the industry?

Focus on delivering concrete results. Before getting started outline metrics that you know you can achieve for your client. Offer a refund if you don’t deliver.

Currently what are the best websites for promoting brands online and why?

The first thing to do before starting any campaign is to research the social landscape for that industry. Each industry has a different “social tool kit” that works best for their brand.

What kind of tips do you have in writing stories for our Readers?

Offer action based value. Some of the best value based content I see is from Tim Ferriss, Jason Fried and Lewis Howes

Give us one of your biggest accomplishments? What are you future goals?

Man, I have so many accomplishments. Hmmmm. I’d say my biggest accomplishment is staying true to myself and to others. Pushing forward everyday to better myself personally and professionally. My future goals are to find time for a personal life :)

If you could improve one thing in the online marketing industry, what would it be?

I wish it wasn’t so difficult to understand. People like my Mom are so overwhelmed with “the interwebs”. Every brand deserves the opportunity to be great and known. That is as long as their product is great.  This is why I spend a good amount of time giving seminars. If I can even help only one person reach their dreams all the time will have been worth it.

What are some of the biggest mistakes that people make in online marketing?

SPAMMING PEOPLE. Boo on them.

We cannot ignore  social media, its popularity is skyrocketing.  What advice do you have for people that want to use your ideas to promote their business?

Set time aside each day to engage online.  Before signing on write out your goals for that day or week. (ie 20 engagement tweets, new content for facebook like/fan page). Just online and research people in your target market. Use tools like twitter search and type in key phrases. Answer problems with genuine solutions, not soliciting. Work steadily on your predetermined goals, then sign off.

You are one of the top internet marketing experts in the world, who do you look up to and turn for advice in this field?

Tony Adam, Neil Patel, bigMETHOD, Jonathan Nafarrete, Frank Kern, Jason Moffatt, Alex Maroko, Lewis Howes , Tim Ferriss, Jason Fried , Gary Misner

The most important thing is my network. I built one of the most powerful networks by caring.  Each one of these people above have made a difference in my life and I do my best to regularly contribute value to theirs. It’s also important to know that if someone has power, but I do not like who they are I do not form a relationship with them.  It’s sad when I see others place more emphasis on power than integrity.

Hope this helps! If you’d like to connect with me here is my LinkedIn profile.  Check out my mind map titled “How to Build a Power Network”.

  2. So glad I came across this profile via Twitter via Lewis Howes. Classic and enduring mind map setting out the steps to build a power network, that I shall study and aspire to myself. I was introduced to social media only a couple of months ago, and now so excited by the possibilities for my invention.
