I was lucky enough to connect with Career Guru, Darrell Gurney, who shed some light on how inbound marketing and lead generation are similar to managing your career. Let’s hear Darrell’s take –
Backdoor Job Search keeps you out of the box…because you’re not looking for a job!
What does “backdoor” mean? It refers to the simple, human-nature fact that folks do favors for those they know and like…favors which can include hiring you or referring you to those who can.
People want to hire and work with people they like and know. So, the question becomes how do you best capitalize on this principle of human nature? By sitting at home and applying to an opening online? By sending in your resume for a posting you saw on a job search engine? NOT!
To avail yourself of human nature, you have to get out and walk around in human nature. You must step outside of your safe and secure abode into the wide world of human interactions, and find ways to interact that get you known and liked by those in the line of hire…but for reasons other than your need for a job!
In Backdoor Job Search: Never Apply for a Job Again! 10 Time-Tested Principles for Launching an Effective ‘Backdoor’ Campaign, I offer a non-traditional approach to job transition and career management…something I’ve coached folks in for years. It is the same approach that had me, a virtual unknown in LA, meet the CFOs of the top 7 entertainment studios in their offices and land a position in International Film Distribution without even going through Human Resources.
80% of all jobs are filled before they are even advertised. So, responding to an ad is only connecting you with 20% of all the jobs that even exist!
Here is just one client example of what can occur in effective “backdoor” campaign:
Miracle Move #1:
Clara, VP of Marketing for a major telecommunications company, wanted to make a change. Possessing a limited front door mentality, she assumed she could only transition into another marketing role, most likely with another telecom company. At this point in her career, her values had shifted substantially. She had a passion for her Jewish culture and had always wanted to do something related to Judaism, but was used to a big corporate paycheck and figured she’d have to take a deep cut—even IF she could qualify for anything in that field. This was all before she learned The Backdoor Job Search Method™.
After a thorough process of career inventory, personal branding and packaging, she began connecting with people through the backdoor, which was not about her needing a job. Rather, she began forming relationships based upon research into her true interests and passions…one of which was Judaism. She ended up landing a position as the Executive Director of a non-profit organization that trains bomb-sniffing dogs for Israel.
All the way from executive employment to everyman jobs, knowing how to be known before an opening arises will always put you ahead of the pack and landing the job before the front door masses hit. If you want different results, you’ll have to think differently…and do things differently.
