Finding the elusive “BEST COMBINATION” of web 2.0 platforms for maximum online visibility can really be daunting. There are so most factors from alignment with overall marketing goals, location of target audiences, corporate privacy policies, just to name a few.

There are two elements of online marketing that seem safe regardless of your strategy, target, or policy. Video and Blog, the question is which one is best to use? In order to answer this question we need to understand a little bit about each one.

Video – People like to watch video. In fact, according to Nielsen 70% of global online users watch video.  The most popular source for video surfers is YouTube owned by Google. However, for the marketer or business person interested in search engine optimization of a website, or more importantly third-party visibility Vimeo is a viable tool. In fact, until Youtube’s recent addition of insights and captions Vimeo videos ranked high.

DIR Incorporated recently conducted a study testing platforms that relate to video. We wanted to experiment with video from the view of the non-technical users; the type that does not even own a camera.

Thus, we created a slideshow featuring one of our Social Media marketing tactics, that serve as a part of our overall marketing strategy. Next, we uploaded the powerpoint to Authorstream and Slideshare. The slideshare version was added to LinkedIN via an application provided by LinkedIN. The Authorstream version was converted into a YouTube video and posted on Youtube via tools featured on Authorstream.

The results were interesting the Authorstream posting out weighed all the others by a significant margin, however, a deeper look proved that the YouTube video, which had an Authorstream hyperlink within it was really the catalyst. See, every time someone viewed to YouTube video both Authorstream and YouTube received a unique visit, yet, every time Authorstream received a unique visit YouTube received zero.

Blog – In the world of online search “Content is King” and no other social media platform offers content management like a blog. When someone search “How To…” a blog is typically within the top three of the search.

Most online marketer say that “Wordpress is best, because of its ability to be a webpage and a blog”. However, Blogger, typepad, livespace, and betablogger are all great tools. It all depends on how the blog is being used.

We recently conducted a survey amongst our staff, clients, and several local Michiana networking groups including; Michiana Leaders in Business, Social Media Club – Michiana, Tweetup Michiana, and Minority Business Network.

As you can imagine the results varied. As engagers the group mostly seemed to like video, because they were able to multi-task, that is, do other things while listening. However, business owners seen to prefer content because of keywords that help search engines find their blogs.

Our conclusion, is simple… offer both.

Most video tools, especially the one recommended within this posting offer video embedding codes. So inputting them is fairly simple. Write a brief introduction about the video and make certain that you are using keywords the audience will search for when looking for what your video offers. If the audience is interested, they will play the video. Some will watch. Others will listen.

The business owner, marketer, or other posting the blog benefits from the backlink the video provides while the blog increases the visibility of the video.
