Industry: Ethical Hacking / Network and Information Security

Tell us about Parameter Security.
In short, we are hackers for hire – ethical hackers, that is. Parameter Security was born out of the need to have true hacking and IT security experts better protect businesses, government, health care, financial and educational institutions and organizations worldwide from vicious hackers.

As Certified Ethical Hackers, we emulate the minds, motives and behaviors of malicious attackers to test the security of your network and employees. We actually conduct a real-work hack on your organization to identify security holes. Then we reveal what sensitive data we accessed, how we got in and offer recommendations for improved overall information security.

What’s the hardest part of your job?
Overcoming the “it won’t happen to me mentality.” Many businesses believe: 1) they don’t possess information hackers want, 2) they have an IT person or staff, so they are safe, 3) they have a firewall, 4) their employees won’t fall for “that stuff,” 5) they’re industry-compliant, so they’re safe. All of these are myths and are eventually debunked after they have been hacked or when they hire ethical hackers who successfully hack their network.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as an entrepreneur?
There are two pieces of advice I find most valuable. The first is “Don’t try to be everything to everybody when it comes to service offerings.” This has helped Parameter Security maintain focus and become a leader in the field of information security. The other:  “Remember why you started your company and remain true to yourself.” This always come to mind when I have a hard business decision to make because it’s easy to sellout if dollars signs are in front of you but it’s not always in your or your company’s best interest.

What would you tell other entrepreneurs?
Recognize your weaknesses and overcome them. What I mean is, focus on your strengths and embrace that fact that you really don’t know it all. A lot of entrepreneurs have a misconception that they either know it all or have to know it all, but that’s not realistic. Surround yourself with people who are experts in the areas you are weak so that collectively you are strong.

Don’t be afraid to say no. In other words, you don’t have to take every customer or strategic partner that comes your way. Trust me, the time and hassle spent dealing with them isn’t worth the money. (I learned this the hard way.) The thought that “Oh I need this sale or this strategic partner for more business” becomes the bane of your existence when it results in sleepless nights, unproductive work days and unnecessary stress. You really can’t put a price on peace of mind.

Lastly, be prepared to eat, sleep and live your business but don’t forget to take time for yourself and your relationships. This ensures your sanity and relationships stay intact. You don’t want to achieve success only to find your personal life has failed. Success isn’t success if it can’t be shared with others.
